The Sedibeng District Municipality has been identified as a high-priority area due to persistently high pollution levels, largely driven by industrial activity and illegal burning. On Friday, May 16th, representatives from SACAQM, along with Maxime Collin of the Pierre Fabre Foundation (France), visited Sedibeng to advance preparations for the deployment of AI_r air quality monitoring devices.

The visit was attended by officials from the Gauteng Department of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment (GDARDE), the South African Local Government Association (SALGA), and representatives from the Emfuleni, Lesedi, and Midvaal local municipalities. The team conducted site inspections across several areas earmarked for sensor installation.

SACAQM commended the high level of engagement, enthusiasm, and dedication demonstrated by government stakeholders, highlighting their strong commitment to improving air quality and protecting community health.

The images below illustrate some of the severe environmental challenges faced in Sedibeng, including visible pollution and illegal burning, as well as selected sites for the upcoming AI_r sensor deployment.
