SciDev.Net has highlighted the work of SACAQM in partnership with CERN. The article, titled “Higgs boson scientists take on South Africa’s air pollution”, showcases how AI-powered innovation (AI_r)—inspired by particle physics—is being used to monitor air quality in real time.

With over 500 low-cost sensors being deployed across Johannesburg’s Sedibeng district, this initiative represents the largest air quality network in Africa. Supported by the governments of South Africa, the UK, and Canada, alongside CERN and iThemba Labs, the project recently won the Global South eHealth Observatory (ODESS) Prize.
