Dr. Edward Nkadimeng of the NRF–iThemba LABS has been honoured with the Presidential Youth Award in Artificial Intelligence at the G20 AI for Africa Forum, held under the patronage of President Cyril Ramaphosa. The award recognises his exceptional leadership and innovation in applying AI across scientific and societal domains.

Dr. Nkadimeng plays a key role in the South African Consortium for Air Quality Monitoring (SACAQM), contributing to the development of the AI_r system, an AI-powered smart air-quality platform supported by the International Development Research Centre (IDRC) and the UK FCDO.

IDRC President Julie Delahanty commended Dr. Nkadimeng’s achievement, noting that it “demonstrates how local talent and home-grown AI solutions can help address urgent health challenges like poor air quality, improving lives across the continent.”

This recognition celebrates both Dr. Nkadimeng’s personal excellence and his contribution to advancing AI for public good through the SACAQM initiative.
